LONDON — March 20, 2003 — magink™ display technologies, Inc., developer of the world’s first full-color digital-ink billboards, today announced the launch of a pilot program in the United Kingdom, with participants including major media and marketing companies such as Clear Channel and Ford of Britain.
Under the pilot program, a prototype of the three-by-six-meter magink digital-ink billboard, manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, will be on display to demonstrate its potential to revolutionize the outdoor advertising industry.
The billboard prototype can be currently seen at Clear Channel’s London headquarters. Ford will be providing creative to test the new technology. The second display in the pilot program is currently being erected in Toronto, and will be followed by displays in the U.S., Korea, Japan and Israel.
Ford of Britain’s Media and Communications Planning Manager Chris Lilley said, “Overall we were impressed by the product and see its potential for enhancing the current outdoor medium in the future. As a significant outdoor advertiser, Ford is always keen to investigate new technology in the medium. We see digital ink as an interesting technological advancement that could eradicate some of the traditional drawbacks to outdoor (such as weather, posting logistics, etc.) and could open up exciting opportunities for creative copy changes taking advantage of the two-second update capability.
We accept that this product is still in the early stages of development from a media point of view and are closely monitoring media owner reaction and take up.”
Robert Thurner, Group Marketing Director of Clear Channel International, said, "Clear Channel is always keen to explore new technologies to assess their commercial value for outdoor advertising and so we have been interested to see magink's digital ink display."
magink’s digital-ink billboards require little electricity, are highly visible in sunlight and can be changed instantaneously based on factors such as viewer reaction, time of day, location, sales results or current events. The displays, which can be networked together and controlled via magink’s centralized management software technology, provide outdoor media companies with new revenue streams, such as the ability to sell space by day-part, and reduce expenses associated with conventional outdoor advertising, such as printing and manpower.
Additionally, the high-resolution display offers advertisers a far more versatile creative canvas.
“London has long been a center of innovation in the advertising industry, so it is only fitting that the first-ever full-color digital-ink billboard be displayed here,” said Ran Poliakine, magink’s CEO. “It is our expectation that the outdoor industry will gradually switch from traditional billboards to digital-ink billboards, which provide a higher return on investment and more versatility for advertisers. We are very happy to be working with Mitsubishi and our marketing and development partners to bring the future of outdoor advertising to London and the rest of the world.”
