Drupa 2004: Ink Jet Goes Prime Time

Hanover, MA…June 2004… drupa 2004, the international print media trade fair for the printing and paper industry took place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 6 May 19, 2004. More than 1,800 companies exhibited at the show. According to I.T. Strategies, eight products met the twin criteria of being both “New” and “Significant” (meaning products which break new ground or hold the realistic promise of doing so). The products are divided into three categories: ink jet printheads, industrial ink jet systems and document ink jet systems.

According to Marco Boer, Consulting Partner, “At drupa this year, ink jet certainly was the big news. We saw the clear emergence of at least four, major integrated ink jet technology solution providers Agfa, Jetrion (Flint Ink), Sun Chemical/Inca, and Kodak all with a clear focus on industrial markets. The ink jet industry now has the potential of real momentum and resources to push new market initiatives with the backing of these companies.”

Other notables ink jet issues from drupa include:

  • Fixed array and high-volume ink jet printing becoming an expectation
  • Ink jet technology beginning to make a credible case against electrophotography at the high end but just beginning
  • The need for third parties who can bridge the gap between core technology providers and industrial/high-volume users in developing systems
  • Industrial ink jet printing becoming big business -- $250 million+ in addressing vendor revenue alone for companies such as HP that have the resources to manage a fragmented, early market
