Universal Laser Systems Goes All The Way To The White House

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Universal Laser Systems, Inc. had the honor of working with Medals of America, the company that makes the presidential flag cases that house the flags flown over the Capitol during the recent inauguration ceremony of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

Medals of America of Fountain Inn, South Carolina recently purchased a laser system from Universal, but were still awaiting delivery of the unit when they received a very important order for flag cases. These flag cases are to be presented to President Bush and Vice-President Cheney by Senator Elizabeth Dole at a later date.

Each flag case contains a triangular, beveled piece of glass that is laser etched with the seals of the President and Vice-President, respectively, along with their names and date of second inauguration. Due to the time constraints, Medals of America requested that Universal Laser Systems, Inc. handle the laser etching. David Stevens, Applications Engineer at Universal Laser Systems, Inc., was happy to oblige.

“The presidential seal and names were laser etched on the inside of the glass on our M-360 laser system using a 60-watt laser with High Power Density Focusing Optics™ installed,” notes Stevens. The special optics were used so that the extremely fine details would be crisp and clear. “The flag cases will be on display at the White House,” Stevens continues. “It’s very exciting that ULS was part of this historic event.”

CO2 laser systems can cut and engrave wood, plastic, paper, and rubber and can etch on glass and coated metals, even some uncoated metals (i.e. stainless steel) with special optics. They run like printers from Windows-based programs, like CorelDRAW® and AutoCAD®.
