SGIA Imaging Symposium provides networking, education for Canadian printers
Fairfax, Virginia - SGIA's Imaging Symposium (Vancouver, October 26-27) combined plenty of networking time with advice and information. Its goal: To give imaging companies in the area tools for understanding, adopting and benefiting from digital imaging technology.
"Integrating Wide-Format Digital: What You Need to Know" focused on the specific needs of today's wide-format graphics producers. Sponsored by suppliers Cascades, Mondrian, ND Graphics and Treck-Hall, it was a venue for hearing from and talking with people who are changing the face of specialty imaging.
"The whole program provided an excellent opportunity for Canadian printers — particularly those in British Columbia — to strengthen their own regional imaging community," said SGIA's Dan Marx, who moderated the event, modeled on June's symposium in Toronto. Marx opened with an overview of digital imaging technology. Subsequent presentations honed in on specifics:
- In his presentation on inkjet ink, head and equipment technology, Eddie Sayers (FujiFilm Sericol) also discussed digital technology's role in the industry.
- Larry Delesio (InteliCoat Technologies) covered the full range of media products available today, including roll media, vinyl, rigid media, textiles and fine art media.
- Mark Noden of Treck-hall punctuated his color management session by creating a color profile for the meeting room's graphics projector.
- Marx and Ted Nesbitt (ND Graphics) presented the stories of five Canadian companies that have successfully integrated digital imaging technology, outlining the companies' digital challenges, advantages, frustrations and rewards.
- Nesbitt followed up the case studies with methods for calculating the potential return on investment for digital equipment purchases.
- Marx closed the day with a list of 10 questions an imager needs to answer before investing in digital technology. (See SGIA.org for the list.)
"There are many options available in digital imaging," Marx said. "SGIA is all about education and keeping companies up to date with our fast-changing industry."
