SEGD Names Fellows for 2007

Washington, DC The Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) announced the selection of Chris Calori and David Vanden-Eynden, founders and principals of Calori & Vanden-Eynden/Design Consultants in New York City, as the 2007 SEGD Fellows. C&VE is an internationally-recognized, award-winning design firm specializing is the planning and design of signage, wayfinding, and identity programs for a wide variety of facility types. Fellows are selected for promoting the highest values in environmental graphic design, and significantly contributing to the direction and growth of the field. Past SEGD Fellows include Garry Emery, Richard Poulin, Wayne Hunt, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar, and Massimo Vignelli.

Chris and David began working on freelance projects in 1981 and started their firm in 1982, making this year the firm’s 25th anniversary. They met as students in the Department of Industrial Design at Ohio State, then moved to San Francisco, and finally settled in New York City. Environmental graphic design and signage in particular has been their firm’s focus from the start, along with some identity work and a little print work. Their work is distinguished by its stylistic diversity, with each design solution tailored to the particular communication needs and formal context of each project. Says Chris, “We approach design from a modernist perspective while consciously avoiding a formulaic, signature style.”

Before forming C&VE, Chris focused on design and management of signage programs for some of America’s leading design firms, including Chermayeff & Geismar Associates, Bonnell Design Associates, and Primo Angeli Graphics. She developed C&VE’s effective “Signage Pyramid” methodology for signage program design and management, as well as the firm’s pioneering service of master planning signage programs for large-scale, phased-implementation sites. Author of Signage and Wayfinding Design: A Complete Guide to Creating Environmental Graphic Design Systems, Chris has also written for a number of other publications.

In his early professional years, David focused on signage design with the leading firms of Lance Wyman Ltd. and Primo Angeli Graphics; he also provided design consultation services to MetaForm, Gottschalk & Ash International, and Frankfurt Balkind + Associates. David was instrumental in developing C&VE’s techniques for conceptualizing, detailing, and documenting the physical components of sign programs, and coordinates the details of large-scale signage projects.

While their most exciting award was the IDSA/Business Week Gold IDEA Award for the Amtrak Acela specialty signage program, Chris and David’s work has received numerous awards from SEGD, AIA, IDSA, AIGA, and the City of New York; has been featured in multiple national and international periodicals and books; and has been included in exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York’s Municipal Arts Society, and the AIGA National Design Gallery.

Chris’s connection with SEGD began while she was a graduate student. She made a deal to swap her Master’s thesis for admission to the SEGD conference. Says David, “Since SEGD was started by a bunch of guys doing ‘signing’, we’re strong advocates of SEGD’s support of its members who practice SEGD’s core competency: signage and wayfinding design.”

Notable C&VE projects over the years include the Washington, DC Citywide Wayfinding & Signage Program; Amtrak Acela Specialty Station Signage, Northeast Corridor Stations; Suzhou International Expo Centre, Suzhou, China; Connect 12 Pedestrian Bridge System Signage Program, Central Hong Kong; City of Tianjin Riverfront Wayfinding and Heritage Trail Signage System, China; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland, OH; ABC Broadcasting Headquarters, New York; The Landmark Tower, Abu Dhabi, UAE; Crate & Barrel World Headquarters; Northbrook, IL; Washington DC Heritage Trail Signage System; Virginia Beach Convention Center; Inventure Place/National Inventors Hall of Fame, Akron, OH; One Raffles Link and One Raffles Quay, Singapore; Azia Center and Super Brand Mall, Shanghai, China.

Chris and David will accept their awards at the SEGD 2007 Annual Conference & Expo, which takes place May 30-June 2, 2007 in Boston, MA.
