Signs of Compassion-Carrollton-based FASTSIGNS International holds employee-contributed clothing drive for Dallas homeless

As the temperature begins to cool down in the Metroplex, North Texans will begin pulling out their warm coats, sweaters and boots. For many, the weather change signals the start of the holiday season. However, for the more than 5,000 homeless people in Dallas, the mercury dropping brings on a new set of challenges.

In an effort to help those who will struggle this winter, FASTSIGNS International, Inc., the sign and graphics franchisor headquartered in Carrollton, held a clothing donation drive at its corporate office to benefit the Dallas Day Resource Center (DRC), an institution that offers a wide range of services and resources to the homeless population. Employees were encouraged to bring in clothing items, blankets and toiletries which were then taken to the center along with a monetary donation.

“Historically, we as a company like to reach out to our community and give back where we can, especially during the holiday season,” Larry Lane, president of FASTSIGNS International, Inc. “An employee approached our executive team with an issue that was close to her heart—assisting the homeless—and with the cold weather coming, we wanted to make this happen.”

The passion of that one employee inspired others in the FASTSIGNS office. Employees rallied together and over the course of three weeks the designated drop-off spot filled to the point of overflow. On November 16th, four employee-volunteered trucks loaded with the donated items were driven to the center. They were met by DRC Manager Rubben Henderson, Sr., along with his staff and volunteers.

“I have worked here for four years and have never seen anything like this come to the center,” said DRC volunteer, Tammie Defreeze. “Any donations we receive typically come from nonprofit and faith-based organizations, not corporations. It is really touching to see how much can be gathered in so little time.”
